Shorewomen Drop Pair to Open Season
Washington Falls to #15 Moravian, Roanoke

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- The Washington College softball team dropped a pair of games to open its season this afternoon at the Atlantic v. East Challenge in Virginia Beach, VA. The Shorewomen fell to 15th-ranked Moravian, 5-3, in their first game and lost to Roanoke, 17-4, in five innings in their second game.

Washington plated three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead on Moravian. Junior Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara), who reached on a lead-off walk, scored on a wild pitch with no outs. Junior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) later drove in senior Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) with a sacrifice bunt, reaching first on a fielder's choice as the Greyhounds threw home, but could not stop Hartman from scoring to make it 2-0. The Shorewomen's third run of the inning came on when sophomore Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) drove in Travers with a two-out single up the middle.

The Greyhounds (2-0) rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Lauren Homa led off the inning with the walk and scored on a single by Sheri Bieniek with no outs two batters later. Two batters after that, Maria DeBonis hit a three-run triple, also with no outs, to put Moravian ahead, 4-3. DeBonis then scored off a single by Kelly Santry to make it 5-3.

Moravian's Beth Paly was the only player with multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Travers was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Washington. Kristie Pellicani picked up the win in relief for the Greyhounds, allowing no runs on no hits and two walks in three and two-thirds innings.

In Washington's second game of the day, Roanoke (1-0) raced out to a 12-0 lead by plating five runs in the first inning, two in the second, and five in the third, before the Shorewomen got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Maroons then tacked on five more runs in the fourth. Washington finished the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Roanoke's Amber Walker homered in each of the first two innings and finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk, four RBI, and two runs scored. Tamara Poles was 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Loren Messick went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Hillary Hudgins was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Amy Gillis got the win for Roanoke, giving up three runs on four walks and five hits in three innings.

Sophomore Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double for the Shorewomen in the loss to Roanoke, while junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) had a double, a walk, and a run scored.

The Shorewomen will play Guilford and Arcadia tomorrow at the Atlantic v. East Challenge at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
