20, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College (14-20) split a non-conference softball doubleheader with visiting Widener (15-14) Thursday afternoon. The Shorewomen scored three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to rally past the Pioneers, 5-4. Widener bounced back to win the second game, 7-0. Washington was down 3-1 in game one going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior outfielder Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) singled, and stole second base before sophomore Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Inst. of Notre Dame) drove her in with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the Widener lead to 3-2. The Pioneers added a run in the top of the seventh inning to increase its lead to 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The first two Washington batters in the bottom of the seventh were retired in order before sophomore third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) singled up the middle to start the Washington rally. Proctor reached on an error by the shortstop, which was followed up by an RBI single off the bat freshman first baseman Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase). Freshman outfielder Stef Morgan (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) then singled in Proctor to tie the game at four. Adams scored the game-winning run on a passed ball with sophomore second baseman Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) at the plate. Sophomore pitcher Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) recorded the victory in the circle for the Shorewomen in relief. Widener took game two from Washington, 7-0. Pioneer pitcher Stephanie Ricciardi gave up six hits while striking out five Shorewomen to earn the victory. Mallory Meyer paced the Widener offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Freshman infielder Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's), Hartman, Proctor, Adams, Morgan and senior outfielder Jess Hoff (Hatboro, PA/Germantown Acad.) each had one hit for Washington in the loss. Washington will host its final home games of the season with a Centennial Conference doubleheader against Dickinson on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. |
