4, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Haverford College swept a pair of Centennial Conference softball games from host Washington College this afternoon at a windy Washington College Softball Field in Chestertown, MD. The Fords (11-11 overall, 4-0 in the CC) won the first game, 11-9, and cruised past the Shorewomen (11-11, 2-2) with a 7-0 victory in game two. Junior outfielder Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) went four-for-five at the plate with two runs scored and two stolen bases in game one and ended the day with five hits for Washington. The Shorewomen entered the bottom of the first inning in game one down 3-0, but came back to tie the contest at three when sophomore third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) belted a three-run home run over the left field fence. The Shorewomen took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning on RBI singles by junior outfielder Maria Hogg (Marriottsville, MD/Liberty) and senior shortstop Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland). The Fords came back with eight runs over the next four innings to take control of the game. Washington scored one in the fourth and fifth innings, and added two more in the bottom of the ninth until Haverford stopped the rally with solid defensive plays at the end of the game. Julia Iodice got the win in relief for Haverford in game one, while senior pitcher Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford) took the loss. The Shorewomen comitted six errors in game one, and started game two with four errors as the Fords tallied five unearned runs in the top of the first inning, en route to the 7-0 victory in game two. Becky Garibotto pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out three batters for the Fords. Garibotto, along with Lindsey Sullivan and Natalie Richman recorded two hits and two RBI each in the victory. Washington freshman pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) gave up only two earned runs in her complete game effort in the circle. Hartman went 1-for-3, while freshman infielder Meghan Luterzo (St. Mary's/Hasbrouck Hts., NJ) went 1-for-2 with a double in the loss. The Shorewomen will return home Thursday at 3:00 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader against Eastern Shore rival and 13th ranked Salisbury. |
