Shorewomen Bury Red Devils
Offense and Pitching Guide WC to Sweep

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College softball team finished its 2006 season with a pair of Centennial Conference victories over Dickinson College Sunday afternoon in Chestertown. The Shorewomen (16-22 overall, 6-10 Centennial) outslugged the Red Devils (16-24, 5-11) with a 10-8 victory in game one. Senior pitcher Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford) pitched a complete game in game two, leading Washington to a 2-1 win.

The Shorewomen found themselves down 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of game one. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, freshman infielder Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) reached on an error. Green then followed with a single to left field. Sophomore catcher Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Inst. of Notre Dame) followed Green's single with a three-run home run over the left field fence to put WC up 8-6. Washington plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, holding on for the 10-8 victory. Senior outfielder Jess Hoff (Hatboro, PA/Germantown Acad.), sophomore third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) and Proctor each had three hits for the Shorewomen in the game. Luterzo finished 2-for-4 at the plate, and hit her first collegiate home run over the right center field fence in the bottom of the first inning.

Rachel Fleming led the Red Devils at the plate in game one, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Washington belted 17 hits as a team in game one, and scored at least one run in each inning except the second. Six Shorewomen recorded at least two hits, while seven different Shorewomen scored at least one run.

Washington defeated Dickinson, 2-1, in game two. The Shorewomen scored both their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Green reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a pass ball. Campbell then drove in Green with a double to deep right center field. Freshman outfielder Stef Morgan (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) drove in Campbell with a single to left field to give Washington a 2-0 lead. Dickinson scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. The Red Devils had the game-tying run on third base with two outs in the seventh, but Green got pinch-hitter Lauren Gallo to ground out to third to finish off the complete game victory.

Senior shortstop Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) along with Campbell each had two hits for the Shorewomen in the game two victory.

Fleming again led the Red Devil offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate in game two. Kaitlyn McDonald and Eve Massa also had two hits for Dickinson in the loss.
