Shorewomen Sweep Widener
Hartman Homers, Nearly Hits for Cycle in Opener

CHESTER, PA -- Visiting Washington College swept both ends of a non-conference softball double-header from host Widener University this afternoon. The Shorewomen won the first game, 6-2, and posted a 7-5 victory in the second game. Sophomore Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) hit her fourth home run of the season and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle in the opener.

Washington improved to 15-9 overall this season with the pair of victories, giving the Shorewomen their highest win total in a season since going 18-14 in 1999.

Hartman went 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a triple, her home run, two RBI, and three runs scored in the game one win. Sophomore Maria Hogg (Marriottsville, MD/Liberty) singled, tripled, and scored a run, while freshman Megan Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) was 2-for-3 with a walk. Senior Andrea Braverman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) singled, scored a run, and drove in a run, while freshman Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) doubled and drove in a run.

Freshman Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) picked up the game one win, pitching five innings and striking out five batters. Freshman Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched the final two innings, struck out three batters, and was credited with a save. Carroll entered the game with no outs, the bases loaded, and the tying run at the plate in the sixth, but got out of the inning without allowing a run.

In the second game, senior Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) went 4-for-4 with three singles, two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI, and three stolen bases for Washington. Junior Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) was 2-4 with a double, a single, and a run scored, while Hartman and Proctor each doubled, scored a run, and drove in a run. Braverman had a base hit and a run scored in the win.

Sophomore Eileen Douglass (Columbia, MD/Atholton) got the win in game two, pitching the first five and two-thirds innings. Laque picked up the save, striking out two batters in the final inning and one-third.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header against Muhlenberg.
