PIERCE, FL -- Senior Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) became the third player in school history to homer twice in one game and the second to homer three times in one day as the Washington College softball team opened its 2005 season with a sweep of Division II Davis & Elkins this evening in Ft. Pierce, FL. The Shorewomen won game one, 10-0, and took game two, 13-5. In game one, junior Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford) went the distance on the mound for the Shorewomen, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four batters. Green also went three-for-four at the plate with a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Scimeca hit one home run, stole two bases, and scored two runs in the first game. Sophomore Maria Hogg (Marriottsville, MD/Liberty) went two-for-two with two RBI, while junior Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) was two-for-three with a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) drove in a pair of runs, while sophomore Meg Lucas (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) scored two runs. In game two, Scimeca hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and finished two-for-three with three runs scored and five RBI in the game. Green also homered in the win, drove in three runs, and scored a run. Mozzer went two-for-four with two runs scored, while senior Andrea Braverman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) went two-for-four with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) tripled and scored two runs. Freshman Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) picked up the win in game two, pitching four innings and allowing four runs, three of them earned. Freshman Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched the final two innings of game two and allowed one earned run. Scimeca's three home runs on the day equaled the single-day school record set by Michelle Rodney on March 11, 2001. Rodney homered twice in the Shorewomen's season-opener against Ripon that day and homered again against Drew later in the day. Scimeca's two home runs in game two marked the fourth two homer performance in school history. Rodney accomplished the feat twice in 2001 - first in the season opener against Ripon and then against Villa Julie on March 28th of that year. Green hit two home runs in one game against Muhlenberg last April 9th. The Shorewomen will play a double-header against Northwestern (MN) tomorrow in Ft. Pierce beginning at 10:00 a.m. |
