Shorewomen Open with Split
WC Wins One Against Pitt-Bradford

FT. PIERCE, FL -- The Washington College softball team opened its 2004 season by splitting a non-conference double-header with Pitt-Bradford this afternoon in Ft. Pierce, FL. The Shorewomen dropped game one, 5-4, but bounced back to win game two, 6-5.

The Shorewomen banged out ten hits in game one. Sophomore Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford), junior Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown), and senior Theresa Pyzik (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) each went two-for-four at the plate in the loss. Green knocked in a run, scored another and tripled, while Scimeca added a run scored and an RBI and Pyzik drove in a run. Green took the loss on the mound, but struck out seven batters.

Washington used a four-run fifth inning to win game two. Freshman Tara Harrigan (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) scored two runs and tripled in the game, while sophomore Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) also tripled and scored a run. Pyzik and senior Natalie Liccketto (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) each went one-for-three with two RBI. Junior Andrea Braverman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) banged out two hits in four at bats. Sophomore Jessica Quarto (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) picked up the win on the mound in game two.

Pitt-Bradford is the defending Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Champion.

The Shorewomen are back in action tomorrow when they face King's College at 10:00 a.m. in Ft. Pierce.
