Shorewomen Sweep Davis & Elkins
First Game Goes to Extra Innings

FT. PIERCE, FL -- The Washington College softball team finished its season-opening Spring Break trip to Ft. Pierce, FL, on a high note today, sweeping Davis & Elkins. The Shorewomen (3-5) won game one, 8-5 in nine innings, and rallied to win game two, 6-5.

In game one, Davis & Elkins tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings tied at 2-2. Each team scored three runs in the eighth inning and the contest headed into the ninth tied at 5-5. A one-out single by freshman Meg Lucas (Pasadena, MD/Northeast), followed by a two-run home run by sophomore Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford) gave the Shorewomen the 8-5 lead in the top of the ninth. Green worked a one-two-three inning on the mound in the ninth to seal the win.

Green finished game one two-for-five at the plate with three RBI, and two runs scored. Only two of the five runs she gave up on the mound were earned and she struck out 11 batters. Lucas was two-for-five with three runs scored and an RBI, while junior Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scored two runs and knocked in another and sophomore Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) drove in two runs.

In game two, the Shorewomen committed three errors in the top of the first inning as Davis & Elkins scored five runs, all unearned, in the frame. Scimeca hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to make it 5-3. Washington got two runs across to tie the game in the third and then scored the game-winning run in the fourth when Lucas scored on a walk by senior Theresa Pyzik (Baltimore, MD/Mercy).

Scimeca was three-for-four with four RBI and two runs scored in game two, while Green went two-for-three with two runs scored. Sophomore Jessica Quarto (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) got the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs.

The Shorewomen are back in action one week from today when they travel to Catholic for a 2:30 p.m. double-header.
