Shorewomen Win, Tie at Catholic
Pyzik, Green Homer in Double-Header

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Washington College softball team improved to 4-5-1 this season with a win and a tie in a non-conference double-header this afternoon at Catholic University. The Shorewomen broke open a close game in the seventh inning en route to a 9-5 win in game one and then rallied from four runs down to salvage a 4-4 tie in game two. The second game was called after seven innings due to darkness.

The Shorewomen led 4-3 heading into the top of the seventh in game one before getting five runs across in that frame. Senior Theresa Pyzik (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) hit a three-run home run to left field with no outs to push the lead to 7-3. Sophomore Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) scored on a one-out single by freshman Maria Hogg (Marriottsville, MD/Liberty) and junior Andrea Braverman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored on an error to make it 9-3. The Cardinals got two runs across in the bottom of the seventh to provide the final margin.

Pyzik was two-for-three with a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored in game one. Braverman went three-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford) was two-for-three at the plate with a walk and two runs scored. Hogg went two-for-three with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Green picked up the win on the mound, giving up five earned runs and striking out four batters.

In game two, Catholic jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Shorewomen got on the board in the fifth when Green hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field. Washington scored another run in the sixth when senior Natalie Liccketto (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) singled in sophomore Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) with one out. In the seventh inning, Green scored on a fielding error following a Braverman single with two outs to tie the game at 4-4.

Green finished game two two-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored. Braverman was three for three with a walk. Sophomore Jessica Quarto (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), who pitched a one-two-three seventh inning to preserve the tie, went the distance on the mound, allowing no earned runs on six hits and no walks.

The Shorewomen open their home schedule Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. double-header against Villa Julie.
