WC Evens CC Record with Sweep of Garnet
Scimeca Blasts Three-Run Homer

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College softball team evened its Centennial Conference record at 4-4 and improved to 13-9 overall with a two-game sweep of Swarthmore this afternoon in Chestertown. WC won the first game, 6-1, and the second, 5-4.

In game one, Swarthmore scored a run in the top of the second, but the Shorewomen plated all six of their runs in the bottom of the fourth to earn the win. Senior Alexis Stapanon (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills) had three hits and knocked in three runs. Senior Christie Allebach (Telford, PA/Souderton Area), freshman Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford), and sophomore Andrea Braverman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) each had two hits in game one. Braverman, Allebach and junior Natalie Liccketto (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) each had an RBI.

Green went the distance in game one, striking out six batters.

In game two, the Shorewomen trailed, 3-1, before sophomore Laura Scimeca (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third. Swarthmore tied things up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth, but freshman Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) drove in Allebach with a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth to score what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Junior Renne Springston (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) drove in the Shorewomen's first run in the first inning and was two-for-three at the plate. Stapanon was two-for-three with two runs scored, while Mozzer was two-for-four with a run and an RBI. Scimeca's blast gave her three RBI and a run scored in the game.

Freshman Jessica Quarto (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) picked up the win on the mound in game two, while Stapanon was credited with a save. The pair combined to pitch 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 3:00 p.m. home conference double-header against Ursinus.
