9, 2003 FT. PIERCE, FL -- The Washington College softball team got its 2003 season off to a good start this evening, sweeping Husson College, 9-1 and 12-2, in a nighttime double-header in Ft. Pierce, FL. Freshmen Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) and Diane Green (Milford, DE/Milford) turned in fine performances in their collegiate debuts. Mozzer homered in her first collegiate at bat in game one and finished the game with a pair of RBI. Green got the win on the mound in the first game, striking out eight batters, while allowing just one run on three hits. Green was also two-for-three with a walk and an RBI at the plate in the game. Junior Renee Springston (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored. In game two, junior Fallon Dillon (Grasonville, MD/Queen Anne's County) picked up the win, allowing a pair of first-inning runs and then shutting down Husson the rest of the way. Mozzer was two-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI in the game, while Green, who played outfield in the second game, tripled and scored twice. Senior Julie Bahus (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Spalding) was two-for-two with two RBI and a run scored. Springston knocked in a run, while freshman Krista Dant (Elkton, MD/Bohemia Manor) tripled and scored a run. Tomorrow, the Shorewomen play a rare split double-header in Ft. Pierce, facing St. Thomas Aquinas at 12:00 p.m. in a single game and then playing a game against Maine Maritime at 2:00 p.m. |
