Shorewomen Tame Tigers, 5-0
Washington Breaks School Record for Shots in a Game

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's soccer team fired off a school-record 38 shots en route to picking up its first win of the season tonight, defeating Trinity (DC) University, 5-0, on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen (1-6) got two goals and two assists from senior forward Sarah Yarbrough (Golden, CO/Arvada West) in the victory.

Washington opened the scoring at 11:58 when Yarbrough sent a pass ahead to freshman forward Jennifer Kiarsis (Rye, NY/Canterbury School, CT), who lobbed the ball over the head and off the outstretched hands of Trinity goalkeeper Cristina Martinez.

Kiauna Hemsley recorded Trinity's first shot of the game when she took a penalty kick 45 seconds into the second half, but Washington junior goalkeeper Caroline Grier (Kennett Square, PA/Sanford School, DE) made a diving save to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. Washington took a 2-0 lead when freshman defender/midfielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) followed in a rebounded shot off the leg of Kiarsis for her first collegiate goal. Yarbrough pushed the lead to 3-0 with a penalty-kick goal at 54:56. Yarbrough scored again at 65:19 on a blast from 30 yards out and then sent a feed in front of the goal to Weida who made it 5-0 at 66:32.

Junior goalkeeper Caroline Grier (Kennett Square, PA/Sanford School, DE) saved both of Trinity's shots in the win for Washington, while Martinez had 14 saves in the loss for the Tigers (1-7).

The Shorewomen's five goals in the game marks the first time they have scored that many goals since a 5-3 win over Notre Dame (MD) on September 1st, 2005. The five-goal margin of victory is the Shorewomen's largest since a 9-0 win over Mount St. Mary (NY) on September 4th, 2004. That 2004 game against Mount St. Mary (NY) also saw the Shorewomen get off 33 shots, which was the school record for shots in a game before tonight's contest.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin & Marshall.
