Shorewomen Open with Win
Russell Scores Twice for Shorewomen

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Washington College women's soccer team won its season opener for the second time in the program's eight varsity seasons this afternoon, defeating host Notre Dame (MD), 5-3, at the Notre Dame Kick-Off Classic in Baltimore, MD. Sophomore forward/midfielder Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian Academy, DE) scored two goals in the win for Washington.

Russell gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead at the 11:34 mark with an unassisted goal. Senior midfielder/forward Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) made it 2-0 in favor of the Shorewomen at 19:16 with a goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Sarah Yarbrough (Golden, CO/Arvada West). The Gators got on the board when Jen Leo scored off an assist from Stephani Jones at 26:46, but Washington maintained a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Notre Dame tied things up in the second half as Jones scored an unassisted goal at 48:17 to knot the score at 2-2. The Shorewomen then reeled off three unanswered goals to take control of the game. Senior midfielder Stephanie Bradley (Weston, MA/Kimball Union Academy) opened the run with an unassisted goal at 56:53. Russell scored her second goal of the day off of an assist from Bradley at 67:21. Yarbrough then completed the three-goal run at 75:54 when she scored off an assist from junior midfielder Christine Chop (Asan, Guam/Guam).

Jones scored her second goal of the game for the Gators at 83:02 to provide the final margin.

Washington held a 20-8 advantage in shots in the game.

Washington's first season-opening win came on August 31st, 2002, when the Shorewomen defeated Albright, 5-0.

The Shorewomen will return to Baltimore to play the final game of the three-team Notre Dame Kick-Off Classic on Saturday. Washington will face Wesley at 11:00 a.m. Wesley and Notre Dame will square off tomorrow.
