1, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- It didn't take long for for junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) to reacclimate herself with the soccer pitch. Hartzell, who until this weekend hadn't played organized soccer since high school, scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Washington College women's soccer team to a 7-2 victory over visiting Marywood in this afternoon's championship game of the Showdown on the Shore. The Shorewomen (2-0) started things off quickly, scoring just 47 seconds into the game when freshman forward Steph Bradley (Weston, MA/Kimball Union Academy) knocked in her first collegiate goal off a pass from freshman forward Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland). Hartzell, who garnered MVP honors with four goals and two assists in the tournament, scored her first goal of the day at the 15:27 mark off a Bradley feed. Her first assist came at 21:08 when she managed, while on the ground, to direct a pass to junior midfielder Jen Cox (Monkton, MD/Hereford), who knocked in a high shot off the crossbar. Hartzell scored her second goal of the game at 28:03 when she headed in a corner kick from junior midfielder Sara Mackeverican (Allentown, PA/Parkland). Fifty-five seconds later, freshman midfielder Arin Huebel (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) scored her first collegiate goal on a rebound to push the lead to 5-0. Marywood (1-1) finally got on the board at 41:08 when Liz Skrzypek found her twin sister Amy Skrzypek for a goal. Then, at 43:19, Liz Skrzypek headed in a Lindsay Pappas pass to cut the lead to 5-2 by the half. The score remained 5-2 until the 73:06 mark when WC freshman forward Gina D'Anna (Timonium, MD/Garrison Forest) knocked in her first collegiate goal off a Hartzell assist. D'Anna rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the game at the 86:28 mark. Washington junior goalkeeper Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) made 12 saves between the pipes for the Shorewomen, who held a 27-14 advantage in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Marymount won the consolation game of the tournament with a 2-0 win over Albright earlier in the day. The Shorewomen, who saw seven players score a total of 12 goals in the two-day Showdown on the Shore, return to action with a 4:30 p.m. game at Notre Dame (MD) Wednesday. Box Score
