19, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Though the Washington College Shorewomen nearly tied the game in the final seconds, Franklin & Marshall escaped with a 1-0 victory over WC in Centennial Conference women's soccer action this afternoon at Shriver Field. F&M (11-1-1, 5-0-1 Centennial Conference) broke a scoreless tie with just 25 seconds left in the first period when Heather Rice scored on a direct kick. The Shorewomen (7-8, 2-5) survived 14 second-half shots from the Diplomats to stay within one goal throughout the second half. WC junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) headed a ball toward an open F&M goal that would have tied the game if an F&M defender hadn't knocked the ball out of play with three seconds left. WC sophomore goalie Jennifer Chapman (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) made 12 saves in the loss, while F&M's Jennifer Fried made eight. The Diplomats outshot the Shorewomen, 22-12, in the game. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with their final home contest of the season - a 3:30 p.m. Centennial game against Haverford.
