31, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's soccer team won its season opener for the first time in its five-year history by knocking off Albright College, 5-0, in the first round of the "Showdown on the Shore" this afternoon at Shriver Field. WC junior forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) became the first Shorewomen ever to score two goals in her collegiate debut. After senior back/midfielder Kelly McClure (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) scored the game's first goal at 9:01, Hartzell, a regular on the Shorewoman basketball team, put together back-to-back scores in a span of just over four minutes. At the 14:32 mark, she scored an unassisted goal off a short shot. At 18:35, she headed the ball in off a pass from junior midfielder Jen Cox (Monkton, MD/Hereford). The Shorewomen pushed the lead to 4-0 at 32:26 when freshman forward Laura Mozzer (Tolland, CT/Tolland) scored her first collegiate goal on a fast break after receiving a feed from junior midfielder Sara Mackeverican (Allentown, PA/Parkland). Cox finished the scoring at 34:46 when she made a nifty move to shake her defender and then nailed a shot off the opposite post and into the Albright goal. The Shorewomen dominated the game on both ends of the field, holding Albright without a shot or corner kick in the first half and finishing with a 28-3 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corners. WC will play in tomorrow's championship game at 2:30 p.m. against Marywood, while Albright will play Marymount in the 12:00 p.m. consolation game. Marywood defeated Marymount, 3-1, in today's other first round game. Box Score
