October
23, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Despite a pair of goals by freshman forward Jordan Rogers (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) on the Shorewomen's first two shots of the game, the Washington College women's soccer team lost, 3-2, in overtime this afternoon against visiting Western Maryland College. The game marked the end of the 2001 season for both squads. The Shorewomen (3-13-2 overall, 1-9 Centennial Conference) got on the board early when Rogers scored off an assist by junior midfielder/forward Sarah Polhamus (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) just 2:22 into the contest. Rogers scored again, this time off a feed from senior midfielder Kerry O'Keefe (Sacramento, CA/El Camino) at the 8:06 mark. The two goals by Rogers were Washington's only two shots in the first half. The Green Terror (8-10, 5-5) got off 11 shots in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. That changed, however, in the second half. Western Maryland sophomore midfielder Christine Mayne (Petersburg, NJ/Ocean City) scored the first of her two goals in the game at 53:58 off an assist from junior forward Melissa Merson (New Windsor, MD/Francis Scott Key). Mayne tied the score on an unassisted goal at 67:44 and had potential game-winning goals denied by a diving Washington sophomore goalkeeper Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) in the 74th and 80th minutes. Merson scored the game-winner for Western Maryland at the 99:36 mark on a pass from freshman midfielder Kimberly Lowry (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll). Higdon finished with 13 saves for the Shorewomen, who were outshot 23-7 in the game. O'Keefe's assist gave her a point in her final collegiate game. Washington senior midfielder/defender Marissa Smithson (Lexington, MD/Great Mills) and senior defender Allison Weisbrod (Montville, NJ/Mount St. Dominic Academy) also finished their Shorewoman careers this afternoon.
