22, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- After starting the season 0-4-2, the Washington College women's soccer team won its second consecutive game and its first at home with a 3-1 win over visiting Alfred today at Shriver Field. The Shorewomen improved to 2-4-2 this season with the win, while the Saxons slipped to 2-6. Washington got on the board first when freshman forward/midfielder Carly Hankins (Pedricktown, NJ/Penns Grove) redirected a feed from junior midfielder/forward Sarah Polhamus (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) at the 19:04 mark. The Shorewomen scored again at 31:14 when freshman forward Jordan Rogers (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) found the upper left-hand corner of the Alfred goal to up the lead to 2-0. In the second half, sophomore back Sara Mackeverican (Allentown, PA/Parkland) added another goal for Washington when she beat her defender at the 58:07 mark. The Saxons finally got on the board at 68:22 when sophomore midfielder Meredith Siegmund (Ridgefield, WA/Ridgefield) scored an unassisted goal. Washington sophomore goalkeeper Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) made 12 saves in the win, while Alfred senior Sarah Stephens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) made 11. The Saxons held a 22-19 edge in shots on goal, but the Shorewomen held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Shorewomen return to Centennial Conference play Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. home game at Ursinus. Box Score
