6, 2003 LORTON, VA -- The 12th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team competed at today's Occoquan Sprints Regatta in Lorton, VA. The Shorewomen's first varsity eight finished first out of 16 boats entered in its event, defeating several Division I boats in the process. It was the Shorewomen's first-ever win in the first varsity eight at the Occoquan Sprints. After winning its heat, the first varsity eight advanced to the final, where the Shorewomen were the only Division III boat. Four Division I boats and one club team boat were in the race, but Washington won it in open water ahead of second-place Drexel. Bucknell finished third. Washington's novice eight finished fifth of 15 boats, while the Shorewomen's second varsity eight was sixth of seven. Senior coxswain Anna Germain (Rock Hall, MD/Christiana, DE) guided the first varsity eight boat. With her in the boat were junior Kelly McGlynn (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) at stroke, junior Sara Beegle (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) in the seven seat, senior Mary McAuliffe (Columbia, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) in the six seat, sophomore Beth Rideout (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) in the five seat, sophomore Liz Smith (Sharpsburg, MD/Boonsboro) in the four seat, sophomore Amanda Smallwood (Fort Washington, MD/Oxon Hill) in the three seat, sophomore Jennifer Bockmiller (Westminster, MD/Westminster) in the two seat, and junior Leona Dalton (Bowie, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) at bow. Freshman Katie Cooper (Annapolis, MD) served as coxswain for the novice eight boat. Also in the boat were freshman Katherine Wilson (Devon, PA) at stroke, freshman Stephanie Gerwitz (Wynnewood, PA) in the seven seat, freshman Caitlyn Koehler (Waldorf, MD/Maurice J. McDonough) in the six seat, freshman Leslie Meredith (Aberdeen, MD) in the five seat, freshman Jeanne Seeberger (Baltimore, MD) in the four seat, freshman Maggie Von Rump (Mystic, CT) in the three seat, freshman Lexi Paza (Williamsport, MD) in the two seat, and freshman Sarah Riklin (Bethesda, MD/Walter Johnson) at bow. Junior Amy Levak (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) was the coxswain for the second varsity eight boat. Joining her in the boat were junior Gina Ralston (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) at stroke, freshman Cassie Ann Slentz (Penn Yann, NY) in the seven seat, senior Heather Reader (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley) in the six seat, freshman Anna Landry (Chesapeake, VA) in the five seat, freshman Elizabeth Davis (Pitman, NJ) in the four seat, sophomore Samantha Hastler (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) in the three seat, sophomore Sarah Kuhlmann (Hackettstown, NJ) in the two seat and junior Meredith Flynn (St. John's, N.F., Canada/Lakefield College School) at bow. The Shorewomen travel to Boston Saturday for a four-way regatta with eighth-ranked Tufts, 11th-ranked Wesleyan, and 18th-ranked Bates. |
