2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Ursinus College scored the last five goals of the game to pull away from host Washington College en route to a 16-8 Centennial Conference women's lacrosse victory tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Bears (7-8, 4-3 Centennial) got four goals from Kaitlin Glenn in the win, while the Shorewomen (7-8, 2-6) saw senior midfielder Lindsay Fox (Laurel, MD/Atholton) become the all-time leader in career caused turnovers at the school. Ursinus raced out to a five-goal lead as Glenn capped off the game-opening run with a goal off an assist from Stephanie Kaysen with 22:08 left in the first half. The Shorewomen scored the next three goals to cut it to 5-3 as freshman attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Caitlin Morrison (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) with 14:53 to play. The teams then traded goals before the Bears ran off three straight goals to open up a 9-4 lead with 7:45 left in the period as Lindsey Urban scored on a free position. Washington trimmed the lead to 9-5 with 5:47 left in the first when junior midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) fed junior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) for a goal. The teams traded goals to open the second half as the Shorewomen cut the lead to three goals three times, the final time coming when Sarah Cannon scored off a feed from freshman midfielder Liz Cumberpatch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) with 22:18 to play to make it 11-8. The Bears controlled possession the rest of the way, however, outshooting the Shorewomen, 10-4, over the final 22 minutes. Ursinus built a 14-8 lead when Kaysen scored off pass from Lisa Clark with 10:53 to go and added a pair of late goals in the final minutes. Glenn was one of five Bears with multiple goals in the game as Elizabeth Cannon added three goals and two assists, Urban contributed three goals and one assist, Clark tallied two goals and four assists, and Kaysen finished with two goals and three assists. Fox, who had three caused turnovers in the game and also scored a goal, picked up her school record-breaking 95th career caused turnover with 18:19 left when she broke up an Ursinus pass and then scooped up a ground ball. She later added her 96th career caused turnover, surpassing the previous record of 94 set by Betty Weller from 2000 to 2003. Sarah Cannon led Washington with three goals and one assist, while Jakub added two goals. Ursinus held a 40-20 advantage in shots in the game and controlled 18 of the game's 26 draws. Ursinus goalie Allyson Shicora made 10 saves in the win, while Washington freshman goalie Amber Madore (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) had 18. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with their season finale, a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Bryn Mawr. |
