Swarthmore Edges WC in OT, 12-11
Jakub Nets Five Goals for Shorewomen

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College survived a second-half comeback from visiting Washington College to post a 12-11 win in over time in a Centennial Conference women's lacrosse game tonight in Swarthmore, PA. The Garnet improved to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 6-8 and 2-4 with the loss.

Swarthmore held a 6-2 lead at halftime after maintaining a 24-7 advantage in shots during the first 20 minutes. The Garnet pushed the lead to 7-2 as Alex Gilbert-Bono scored off a feed from Megan Sanborn with 21:29 remaining.

The Shorewomen then began their rally as senior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored with 20:18 remaining and sophomore attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) scored three straight goals, the second two assisted by junior defender Lindsay Fox (Laurel, MD/Atholton), to make it 7-6 with 14:15 remaining. Swarthmore ended the run when Marissa Schaffer scored with 13:58 to play to make it 8-6. Beane and Schaffer then traded unassisted goals to make the score 9-7 with 8:19 on the clock. Sanborn gave Swarthmore a 10-7 lead with a free-position goal with 7:06 remaining.

Washington junior midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) scored a free-position goal with 6:44 on the clock and Beane followed with a goal with 4:29 remaining trim the margin to 10-9. Swarthmore appeared to take back control of the game when Schaffer scored off a pass from Katie Crawford with 4:12 left in regulation. The Garnet held the Shorewomen off the scoreboard after that until Jakub scored with 1:51 on the clock to make it 11-10. Swarthmore won the ensuing draw, but Fox caused a turnover and scooped up a ground ball with 44 seconds left, leading to a Washington clear and the game-tying goal by senior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) off a feed from sophomore midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) with 36 seconds left in regulation. Neither team got a shot off during the rest of regulation. Washington held a 20-12 advantage in shots in the second half.

Crawford scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal with 46 seconds to play in the first overtime period. Lambert's shot with three seconds left in the first overtime was saved by Swarthmore goalie Allison Grein. Swarthmore took the only shot of the second three-minute overtime period. The Garnet gained possession of the ball for good with just under two minutes left in the second overtime period and ran out the clock to hold on for the win.

Crawford led Swarthmore with three goals and one assist, while Schaffer totaled three goals of her own. Sanborn tallied a team-high four caused turnovers to go along with her goal and assist. Gilbert-Bono had a game-high five draw controls to go along her one goal and one assist. Grein made six saves in goal for the Garnet and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.

Jakub led all scorers with five goals for the Shorewomen. Beane added three goals and one assist, while Fox totaled a game-high five caused turnovers, a team-high six ground balls, and two assists. Washington senior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made 19 saves in the loss.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Dickinson.
