CITY, MD -- 13th ranked St. Mary's (MD) scored five unanswered goals in a span
of 9:45 covering both halves en route to a 12-7 victory over visiting Washington
College in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 2-1 overall with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped
to 0-1 with the loss. Elizabeth Northfield snapped a 4-4 tie with 4:43 remaining in the opening half to begin the Seahawks five-goal spurt. The hosts made it 7-4 with four seconds remaining in the first half on a goal by Danielle Miller. St. Mary's capped the run with a goal by Allie Zerhusen with 24:38 left in the tilt on a free position shot. The Shorewomen cut the deficit to 9-6 with 14:23 to go on attacker Suzie Jakub's (University Park, MD/St. John's College (DC) second goal of the contest, but Washington College could draw no closer. Washington College got on the board first 3:48 into the contest when senior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) netted her first goal of the season. After the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead, the Shorewomen answered with the next two goals to grab a 3-2 lead with 12:30 to go in the first half on tallies by Jakub and senior attack Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) respectively. Beane knotted the game at 4-4 on a unassisted goal with 5:59 to go in the first half. Jakub led the way for the Shorewomen with three goals. Beane bagged two goals for Washington, while Ruppert and freshman midfielder Jamie Jones (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) scored once each. For Jones, it was her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate game. Sophomore midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) dished out two assists, while freshman attack Allie Hanzsche (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) registered one assist in her first collegiate contest.. The Seahawks were led by three goals from Danielle Miller, while Lauren Carrier, Northfield and Zerhusen notched two goals a piece. Kelsey Branch had a game-high three assists and Carrier added two assists for St. Mary's. Karisa Carroll had a game-best nine ground balls. St. Mary's caused 11 of Washington's 23 turnovers, while the Shorewomen caused seven of the Seahawks 24 giveaways. Washington went 17-for-22 on clears and St. Mary's was 16-for-19 on its clears. The hosts outshot the guests by a 29-19 margin. Melissa Puzak made eight saves in the win for St. Mary's, while senior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) turned away 10 shots and also had a team-best four ground balls for Washington. The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday, March 3, at noon when they travel to the banks of the Hudson River to take on Stevens Tech in Hoboken, NJ. |
