2007 WELLINGTON, FL -- Ohio Wesleyan University scored five of the seven second-half goals to defeat Washington College, 7-6, in a women's lacrosse game played today in Wellington, FL. The Bishops improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 2-3 with the loss. The Shorewomen held a 4-2 lead at halftime in the game. Julia Fouts opened the second-half scoring for Ohio Wesleyan with a free-position goal with 28:35 remaining, but Washington countered with a goal by senior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) off an assist from sophomore attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) with 19:33 remaining. The Bishops again cut the lead to one goal with 17:58 on the clock when Lura Allen scored on a free-position shot. Neither team scored again until the 6:36 mark when OWU's Jamie Blake found Hannah Mudge for a goal to knot the score at 5-5. The Bishops took the lead 19 seconds later when Blake found Alexa Deaton for a goal at 6:17. The Shorewomen tied the score with 3:38 remaining when junior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) fed junior midfielder Alli Luchey (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) from behind the cage for a tally to make it 6-6. Blake scored what would prove to be the game-winner off an assist from Mudge. Blake finished the game with one goal and three assists for Ohio Wesleyan, while Deaton totaled two goals. Jakub led the Shorewomen with two goals and two assists, while Beane added two goals and one assist. Ohio Wesleyan held a 16-11 edge in shots in the game. Maggie Eichenlaub made three saves in goal for the Bishops, while senior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made nine saves for the Shorewomen. Junior defender Lindsay Fox (Laurel, MD/Atholton) finished the game with five caused turnovers, four ground balls, and four draw controls for Washington. The Shorewomen return to action Thursday as they open their Centennial Conference schedule with a 9:00 a.m. game against second-ranked Gettysburg in Wellington. |
