#14 McDaniel Nips Shorewomen, 13-12
Green Terror Holds Off Washington Comeback

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Fourteenth-ranked McDaniel College scored the first three goals of the second half and quelled a comeback attempt by host Washington College to earn a 13-12 Centennial Conference women's lacrosse victory this evening on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. McDaniel moved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 4-7 and 0-3 with the loss.

McDaniel held a 7-4 lead in the first half before the Shorewomen closed the period with a 3-1 spurt to make it 8-7 at the break. The Green Terror opened the second half hot as Meagan Mattson found Kerrie Wuenschel for a goal at 28:46, Mattson scored a goal 14 seconds later, and Erinn Hopkins followed with a goal with 25:40 to play to make it 11-7.

Washington answered with a three-goal run of its own. Junior defender Lindsay Fox (Laurel, MD/Atholton) scored with 18:25 remaining, senior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) tallied a goal with 13:16 to play, and sophomore attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) found junior midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) for a goal with 10:56 remaining to trim the deficit to 11-10.

Connie Wuenschel ended the Shorewomen's run by scoring on a free-position shot with 7:38 remaining and Mattson gave the Green Terror a 13-10 cushion with 3:30 left, but the Shorewomen rallied once more. Senior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored on a free position with 2:35 left to make it 13-11. Jakub then won the ensuing draw and passed to Fox. A Fox pass toward the McDaniel goal was broken up, but Fox recovered the loose ball and scored in one motion to trim the lead to 13-12 with 2:23 on the clock.

Michelle Fluty won the ensuing draw for the Green Terror, who kept the ball on their offensive end of the field until a successful Washington clear with just under a minute remaining. Washington turned the ball over before getting a shot off, however, and McDaniel cleared the ball to hold on for the win.

Mattson led McDaniel with five goals, while Hopkins and and Emily Funk each scored three times. Jakub scored three goals and assisted on another for the Shorewomen, while Gouck finished with three goals. Ruppert added two goals and one assist for the Shorewomen, while Beane and Fox each had two goals.

Sarah White made 17 saves for the Green Terror, while senior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made 14 stops for the Shorewomen.

Washington held a 33-32 advantage in shots and a 14-13 advantage in draw controls in the game, but committed five more turnovers than McDaniel (21 to 16).

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
