April 6, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Heidi Fieselmann scored the game-winning goal with 45.8 seconds left in the game to give visiting Swarthmore an 8-7 Centennial Conference women's lacrosse win over host Washington College this evening at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Garnet improved to 10-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 6-7 and 1-4 with the loss. Fieselmann also opening the scoring with a goal off a feed from Niamh Shortt one minute into the game. Washington then scored the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman attacker Sally Mancini (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) scored the first three of those goals, with 27:25, 23:51, and 21:06, remaining in the half, respectively. Junior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton), sophomore midfielder Alli Luchey (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air), and sophomore midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) assisted on Mancini's goals. Beane then fired in a goal of her own with 15:11 left in the half to give Washington a three goal lead. The Garnet pulled to within one goal by halftime as Anna de Regt scored two goals with 11:15 and 9:45 left in the first half to cut the margin to 4-3. De Regt scored again to open the second-half scoring, deadlocking the game at 4-4 with 22:15 to play. Beane answered with a pair of goals for Washington with 16:16 and 14:03 remaining, respectively, to put the Shorewomen in front, 6-4. Niamh Shortt cut the lead to 6-5 as she scored for the Garnet with 13:03 left, but junior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) scored with 10:32 remaining for Washington to push the lead back to two goals at 7-5. Swarthmore then finished the game with three unanswered goals, outshooting Washington, 8-1. Katie Crawford pulled Swarthmore to within one with 8:00 left, while Lindsay Roth knotted the score at 8-8 34 seconds later. Fieselmann put Swarthmore in front with her game-winner with 45.8 seconds left and de Regt controlled the ensuing draw as the Garnet ran out the clock. De Regt led the Garnet with three goals, while Fieselmann added two. Beane finished with three goals and an assist for Washington, while Mancini also scored three goals. Susannah Blair made five saves for Swarthmore, while junior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made nine stops for Washington. Swarthmore outshot the Shorewomen, 28-21, in the game and held a 12-5 advantage in draw controls. Megan Sanborn had a game-high four draw controls for Swarthmore. Sophomore defender Lindsay Fox (Laurel, MD/Atholton) tallied game-highs of six ground balls and five caused turnovers for Washington. The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday with a 5:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against third-ranked Gettysburg. |
