25, 2006 ROCKY MOUNT, NC -- Freshman attacker Sally Mancini (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) scored six goals and assisted on another and freshman attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) tied a school record for ground balls in a game with nine as visiting Washington College topped host North Carolina Wesleyan, 17-10, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game in Rocky Mount, NC. The game was the season opener for the Shorewomen, while the Battling Bishops fell to 0-2 with the loss. Washington held an 11-5 lead at the half and never looked back in the victory. Joining Mancini as the Shorewomen's leading scorers in the game were senior midfielder Erin Bollinger (Perry Hall, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), who finished with three goals and an assist, and junior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton), who also scored three goals. Freshman defender Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) recorded three assists in her first collegiate game. Jakub's nine ground balls tied the school record set by Janet Studdiford in 2003 and matched by Tarra Boulden in 2005. Jakub also scored two goals in today's win. Junior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) played the first half in goal for the Shorewomen and made five saves. Sophomore goalie Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) made one save in the second half. Buffy Castro led the Battling Bishops with seven goals and one assist. Allie Stylc added three goals and three assists for North Carolina Wesleyan. The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Marymount. |
