March 10, 2005 ORLANDO, FL -- Shenandoah University scored the final four goals of the first half and three of the final four goals in the second half to post a 13-11 women's lacrosse victory over Washington College this morning at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Hornets improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 1-2 with the loss. Washington led 4-1 with 18 minutes left in the first half and 7-5 with 5:28 remaining in the half. Shenandoah came charging back in the closing minutes of the period as Erika Bradd scored with 5:15 left and then tied the game at 7-7 off an assist from Melissa Bryant 12 seconds later. Lauren Carpinello gave the Hornets an 8-7 lead with a goal off an assist from Bradd with 2:16 on the clock and Joia Davis scored on a free position with 1:29 left in the half to push the lead to 9-7. The Shorewomen responded in the second half by opening the period with a 3-1 run. Senior defender Tarra Boulden (Newark, DE/Tower Hill) scored off a feed from senior attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) with 24:24 remaining. Kelly Matagiese answered for the Hornets with a goal with 18:04 left, but Eichner scored off an assist from sophomore attacker/midfielder Megan Block (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) with 14:26 remaining and found freshman midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) for a goal with 13:46 to play that knotted the score at 10-10. Shenandoah responded with three unanswered goals. Matagiese scored off a free position with 11:58 to play and then fired in another goal with 8:22 left to put the Hornets up, 12-10. Nikki Leonard extended the lead to 13-10 with a goal with 5:31 remaining. Boulden scored on a free position for Washington with 2:54 to play to provide the final margin. Bradd led the Hornets in the win with four goals and two assists, while Matagiese netted four goals of her own. Bryant tallied a goal and an assist, while Leonard, Carpinello, Davis, and Lauren Prentice each tallied one goal. Wendy Taylor played the first half in goal for Shenandoah and tallied four saves, while Jessica Young played the second half and contributed two saves. Eichner paced Washington with four goals and two assists, while Boulden finished with three goals, and Gouck tallied two goals and one assist. Block and sophomore attacker/midfielder Lauren Sampson (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) each added one goal and one assist. Freshman attackman Megan Rainey (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding), freshman attacker Kristen Panos (Towson, MD/Towson), and sophomore attacker/midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) tallied one assist each. The assists for Panos and Rainey were the first of their collegiate careers. Sophomore goalie Nanna Kozemchak (Falls Church, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) played the first half for the Shorewomen and made three saves. Sophomore goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) played the second half and made eight saves. Boulden added a team-high seven ground balls and four draw controls to go along with her three goals, while junior defender Megan Crisler (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) paced the Shorewomen in caused turnovers with five and scooped up five ground balls. Shenandoah held a 27-26 advantage in shots in the game. The Shorewomen will return to action Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Villa Julie. |
