Shorewomen Hold Off Garnet
Sawma Fires In Seven Goals

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored seven goals and assisted on another as the host Washington College women's lacrosse team held off a second-half rally by visiting Swarthmore College to post a 13-11 Centennial Conference win this afternoon at Shriver Field.

The Shorewomen (5-3, 2-1 Centennial) held a 9-3 lead at halftime and took their biggest lead of the game when freshman midfielder/attacker Megan Block (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) scored off an assist from junior attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) with 24:59 remaining in the second to push the lead to 12-4.

The Garnet Tide (4-3, 0-2) then reeled off seven unanswered goals in under 12 minutes. An unassisted goal by Jackie Kahn with 7:22 remaining pulled Swarthmore to within one goal at 12-11. WC senior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) scored the final goal of the game with 4:14 on the clock off an assist from senior midfielder Erin Alessi (Baldwin, MD/Notre Dame Prep).

Six of Sawma's seven goals came in the first half. Block added two goals in the win, while Studdiford finished with one goal and two assists and sophomore midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) tallied three assists. Eichner contributed one goal and one assist, while senior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) tallied two assists. Freshman midfielder/attacker Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and sophomore attacker Erin Bollinger (Perry Hall, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) each scored one goal for the Shorewomen, while Alessi tallied one assist.

Lindsay Roth led Swarthmore offensively with four goals and one assist. Kahn totaled three goals, while Heidi Fieselmann and Ele Forbes each scored two goals.

Freshman goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made 10 saves and scooped up a game-high six ground balls for Washington, while Jennifer Hart made 12 stops for the Garnet Tide.

Sayres controlled a game-high seven draws, while Washington senior defender Diana Martin (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) recorded a game-best four caused turnovers.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against fifth-ranked Gettysburg.
