11, 2004 ORLANDO, FL -- St. John Fisher handed the Washington College women's lacrosse team its first loss of the season this evening, defeating the Shorewomen, 13-11, in Orlando, FL. The Shorewomen slipped to 3-1 with the loss, while the Cardinals improved to 1-1 this season with the win. St. John Fisher jumped out to a 5-1 lead 15 minutes into the game and led 8-4 at halftime. The Cardinals took their biggest lead of the game at 12-6 when Haley Koperski scored off a free-position shot with 13:45 left in the second half. WC senior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) scored the next two goals off assists from junior attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) with 11:49 and 10:46 remaining, respectively. Neither team would score again until the clock read 5:15 when Kara Chase scored to push the Cardinal lead to 13-8. Studdiford, Eichner, and senior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) each scored a goal in the final two minutes for the Shorewomen, but it was not enough as St. John Fisher held on for the win. Mary Bergmann led the Cardinal offense with four goals and two assists, while Koperski and Theresa Nobilski scored three goals each. Michelle Bloom had a big game in goal for St. John Fisher, making 16 saves to help offset a 29-16 advantage in shots for the Shorewomen. Studdiford paced the Shorewomen with five goals, while Eichner tallied one goal and four assists. Sawma scored four goals in the loss, while sophomore midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) notched three assists. Senior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) scored one goal and led WC with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore attacker Erin Bollinger (Perry Hall, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) contributed one assist. The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Stevens Tech. |
