24, 2004 WESTMINSTER, MD -- Host McDaniel College jumped out to a 6-1 lead and scored the final two goals of the game to defeat visiting Washington College, 10-9, this afternoon in a Centennial Conference women's lacrosse game. The Green Terror improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 3-3 and 0-1. The Green Terror took their early five-goal lead when Sara Thomas scored off an assist from Tara Smith with 18:50 to play in the first half. The Shorewomen then scored the final three goals of the second half, pulling to within 6-4 when junior attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) found freshman midfielder/attacker Megan Block (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) for a goal with 3:11 left in the period. Washington opened the second half by closing the gap to 6-5 on an Eichner goal with 28:09 to play. Thomas answered for McDaniel with a free-position goal with 24:32 left. WC senior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) then scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) with 23:36 on the clock, but Smith scored for McDaniel to make it 8-6 with 15:33 remaining. The Shorewomen then scored three unanswered goals to take their only lead of the game. Senior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) started things off with a free-position goal with 11:06 left. Studdiford scored an unassisted goal with 8:27 remaining and Eichner followed with an unassisted tally of her own 24 seconds later to tilt the score to 9-8 in favor of Washington. Kristin Ramey tied things up for the Green Terror with a free-position goal with 6:17 left and then assisted on the game-winning goal as Thomas scored with 5:41 to play. Ramey finished with two goals and two assists and Thomas tallied three goals to lead the McDaniel offense in the win. Jillian Farrel added two goals, while Kim Lowry and Smith each had one goal and one assist. Studdiford led the Shorewomen with a game-high four goals, while Eichner tallied two goals and two assists. Sayres tallied eight ground balls and five caused turnovers to go along with her goal, while senior defender Diana Martin (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) contributed eight ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Lindsay O'Steen made 12 saves in the win for the Green Terror. Freshman goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) recorded 14 stops for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Muhlenberg. |
