2, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) scored five goals and assisted on four others as the Washington College women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Marymount University, 17-12, this afternoon at Shriver Field. The game was the season opener for both teams and marked the Washington College head-coaching debut of Suzie Friedrich. The Shorewomen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half before a 4-1 run by the Saints cut the margin to three goals at 5-4 with 5:01 left in the period. Eichner found senior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) for a pair of goals with 4:36 and 45 seconds remaining in the half, respectively, to give Washington a 7-4 lead at the break. Susan Decker scored on a free position for the Saints with 28:09 to go in the second half to pull Marymount back within two at 7-5, but Washington ripped off three straight goals in under two minutes to push the lead to 10-5. Eichner scored off a feed from senior defender Erin Alessi (Baldwin, MD/Notre Dame Prep) with 24:53 left to cap off the three-goal spurt. The Shorewomen led by at least three goals the rest of the way. Eichner scooped up a team-high four ground balls to go with her five goals and four assists. Sawma tallied five goals of her own in addition to recording one assist. Senior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) added three goals and two assists, while sophomore midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) tallied two goals for the Shorewomen. Sophomore attacker Erin Bollinger (Perry Hall, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) contributed one goal and one assist, while Alessi and senior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) each notched two assists in the win. Sophomore defender Megan Crisler (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) scored her first collegiate goal on a free position shot in the first half. Decker led the Saints with five goals and one assist. Kerry Adler tallied three goals and one assist for Marymount, while Beth Horrigan finished with three goals. Ashley Natoli added one goal and one assist. Freshman goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made 11 saves in net for Washington. Rachel Sybor made 13 stops for the Saints. Washington held a 36-24 advantage in shots and a 28-15 edge in ground balls in the game. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home game against Denison. |
