7, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) scored four goals and recorded six assists to lead host Washington College to a 16-14 win over visiting Haverford in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Shriver Field. The Shorewomen improved to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the win, while the Fords slipped to 3-5 and 1-3 with the loss. Haverford led 5-2 with under 20 minutes to play in the first half, but the Shorewomen reeled off six consecutive goals to pull ahead, 8-5. Senior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) capped off the run with a goal off a feed from senior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) with 5:03 left in the half. Haverford's Jody Mayer scored off a feed from Mindy Walman with 2:47 remaining to make it 8-6 at halftime. The Shorewomen outscored the Fords, 7-2, over the first 15 minutes of the second half. Studdiford gave the Shorewomen their biggest lead of the contest when she fired in a goal off a feed from senior midfielder Erin Alessi (Baldwin, MD/Notre Dame Prep) with 15:43 left, upping the margin to 15-8. Haverford finished the game on a 6-1 spurt, but could not come all the way back to tie the contest. Margaret Sampson scored the final goal of the game off a Walman assist with 45 seconds on the clock. Eichner's six assists push her season total to 37, one shy of the single-season school record set by Studdiford just last season. Studdiford finished with four goals and two assists in the win, while Sawma tallied two goals and three assists. Sophomore midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) , freshman midfielder/attacker Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park), and sophomore attacker Erin Bollinger (Perry Hall, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) each scored two goals, while Alessi totaled two assists. Senior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) contributed a game-high six draw controls, while senior defender Diana Martin (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) recorded a game-high six caused turnovers for Washington. Walman matched Eichner's 10 points, scoring a game-high six goals and assisting on four others for Haverford. Mary Van Ogtrop added three goals and three assists, while Samspon and Mayer each finished with two goals. Meredith Wen accounted for the Fords' other goal. The Fords held a 21-11 advantage in draw controls, but committed 29 turnovers to the Shorewomen's 15. Washington held a 35-22 advantage in shots. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at 17th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. |
