WC Gets First Win in Collegeville
Shorewomen Down Ursinus, 12-9

COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- The Washington College women's lacrosse team posted its first-ever win at Ursinus and just its second-ever win over the Bears this afternoon, topping the host squad, 12-9, in a Centennial Conference game. The Shorewomen (12-3, 7-2 Centennial) got six goals and two assists from junior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) in the win. Studdiford also broke Washington's single-season ground ball record in the game.

Washington jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first ten minutes of the game and held off Ursinus (7-6, 5-3) the rest of the way. Studdiford opened the scoring just 2:12 into the game and a goal by junior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) quickly followed just 16 seconds later. Studdiford scored again with 24:26 left in the first half off an assist from sophomore attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) to make it 3-0 before Ursinus's Julie Gentile scored on a free position for the Bears' first goal. Studdiford then scored at the 23:24 mark, fed Sawma for a goal at 22:14, and scored again with 20:22 left in the half to give WC its five-goal advantage.

The Bears would pull two within two before the break, however, as Ashley Ettinger assisted on goals by Aubrey Andre and Emily Durkin at 12:32 and 2:32, respectively, and Gentile scored off an assist from Oksana Yaworsky with 51 seconds left in the period to make it 6-4.

The Shorewomen struck quickly to start the second half as Sawma fed Eichner for a goal with 28:34 to play. The Bears answered at 23:33 with a goal by Andre and then narrowed the gap to 7-6 when Durkin scored off a feed from Gentile with 22:05 left. The Shorewomen pushed the lead back up to three as Eichner found Studdiford at 21:07 and Studdiford assisted on a goal by senior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) with 17:14 remaining. The Bears repsonded with a goal by Erika Weir at 14:24 and a goal by Durkin off a Weir assist at 12:46 that again trimmed the lead to one at 9-8.

WC freshman midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) then fired home a goal with 9:57 to play to make it 10-8. The Bears closed the gap to one with 7:02 to play as Durkin scored on a free position, but Studdiford scored on a free-position goal with 4:12 remaining to make it 11-9. The Bears had scoring opportunities in the ensuing minutes but the WC defense held fast. After a save and clear by freshman goalie Ashley Crisler (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) on what would prove to be the Bears' final possession, Washington successfully ran over 2:30 off the clock before Weller fired in the final goal of the game with just nine seconds remaining.

Studdiford scooped up five ground balls to go along with her eight-point outing. The first of those ground balls was her 62nd of the season, breaking the school record set by Maggy Kilroy in 2000. That year was also the year in which Washington posted its only previous win over Ursinus, a 13-10 victory in Chestertown.

Sawma finished with two goals and one assist, while Eichner had a goal and two assists. Weller scooped up eight ground balls to go along with her two goals. Sophomore midfielder Tarra Boulden (Newark, DE/Tower Hill) came off the bench record a team-high four caused turnovers. Crisler made 12 saves between the pipes for the Shorewomen.

Durkin led the Ursinus offense with four goals. Melissa Scholl made 17 stops in goal for the Bears.

With the win, the Shorewomen locked up the third seed in next weekend's Centennial Conference semifinals. Washington's final regular season game is slated for Wednesday, a 4:00 p.m. home contest against second-ranked College of New Jersey.
