April
30, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's lacrosse team fell to unbeaten and second-ranked College of New Jersey, 16-3, this afternoon at Shriver Field. Senior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) scored two goals to lead the Shorewomen (12-4). Washington scored 14 seconds into the game to take a quick 1-0 lead as Weller controlled the opening draw and raced down the field to score an unassisted goal. Katie Wagenblast then scored off a free position for the Lions (13-0) with 21:31 left in the first half, but Washington took the lead again when junior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) found junior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) for a goal with 18:16 to play before the break. New Jersey quickly tied things up, however, as Carin Heller scored 13 seconds later. Her goal was the beginning of a 10-0 run for the Lions that put them up, 11-2. Weller's second goal broke that run and came off a free position with 15:33 left in the game. The Lions then scored the final five goals of the contest to provide the final margin. Freshman goalie Ashley Crisler (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) made 16 saves for WC. Sawma controlled a team-high four draws. Bridget Bigley scored five goals for New Jersey, all in the second half. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday as they take on 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference semifinals at Gettysburg College. Game time will be approximately 4:00 p.m., depending on when the first semifinal game is completed. BOX SCORE
