2003 HOBOKEN, NJ -- Junior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) scored eight goals and handed out three assists to lead the Washington College Shorewomen to a 16-14 win over host Stevens Tech in the first round of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Playoffs this afternoon. Studdiford also broke Washington's school records for points and assists in the season in the win. Stevens Tech (15-3) jumped out to an 8-4 lead before the Shorewomen (13-5) scored six goals in a span of 5:20 late in the first half to take a 10-8 lead into the break. Studdiford started the run with a goal off an assist from senior attacker Tracy Smet (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) with 7:48 to go before the half. Junior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) then scored with 6:23 left and junior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) with 5:24 left. With 3:30 remaining, Studdiford scored off an assist from senior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) with 3:30 left. Twenty-six seconds later, it was Studdiford picking up the assist on a goal by sophomore attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan). Senior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) finished off the run with a goal off a feed from Sawma with 2:28 left in the half. The Ducks opened the second half with a three-goal run to pull back into the lead. Rebecca Quinn scored with 20:55 left, Kim Mirra scored with 20:01 to go, and Valerie Barnhart fired in a free-position goal with 19:40 left to make it 11-10 in favor of Stevens. The Shorewomen then went on a three-goal run of their own as Studdiford scored an unassisted goal with 18:0 to play, converted a free-position goal with 15:50 left, and scored off a Sawma feed with 13:58 to play to give WC a 13-11 lead. Mirra scored for Stevens with 13:37 left to pull the Ducks back within one, but Weller scored off an assist from senior midfielder Kristen Bozzella (Harwood, MD/Southern) with 11:32 remaining to push the lead to 14-12. Barnhardt answered with a goal with 10:34 to play to slice the deficit back to one, but again Washington countered as Studdiford batted in a goal off a Heller assist with 8:07 left. Stevens would once again get back within one when Jess Soltysik scored on a free position with 6:37 left to make it 15-14. The Ducks had an opportunity to tie the game with under four minutes left, but missed an empty-net free position shot. Bozzella scooped up the ground ball and started a good clear for WC as the Shorewomen went on to possess the ball for over three minutes before Sawma fired in an insurance goal off a Studdiford assist with 21 seconds left. Studdiford's three assists on the day gave her 34 for the season, surpassing the school record of 32 set in 2000 by Maggy Kilroy. Her 11 points gave her 88 on the season, surpassing the school record of 84, also set by Kilroy in 2000. Sayres and Sawma each added two goals and two assists for Washington. Sayres scooped up a team-best five ground balls. Barnhart led the Ducks with five goals, while Mirra finished with four goals and one assist. The Shorewomen, the sixth seed in the tournament, will face St. Lawrence, the tournament's second seed in a 2:00 p.m. semifinal at top-seeded Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
