Sawma Scores Eight Goals in Win
Weller Breaks Caused Turnover Record

MUHLENBERG, PA -- Junior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored eight goals and two assists to lead the visiting Washington College Shorewomen past Muhlenberg, 18-9, this afternoon in a Centennial Conference game. Senior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) broke the school record for caused turnovers in a career for the Shorewomen, who are now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The game was knotted at 3-3 before the Shorewomen scored three unanswered goals during the middle portion of the first half. The Mules (2-3, 0-1) got back to within two goals, at 6-4, but four more unanswered goals over a span of less then six minutes gave the Shorewomen a 10-4 lead with 1:09 to play in the first. The Mules tacked on a goal in the closing seconds of the half to make it 10-5 at the break. Sawma scored four goals during the pivotal 7-1 spurt in the first half for the Shorewomen.

Washington scored the first two goals of the second half and never looked back en route to the win. Sawma was joined in the scoring column by junior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School), who tallied six goals and one assist. Senior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) finished with two goals and one assist, while sophomore attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added one goal and two assists.

Weller, who scored the Shorewomen's fourth goal of the game, was credited with five caused turnovers in the game, pushing her career total to 78, three more than the previous record set by Maggy Kilroy from 1997-2000.

Freshman goalie Ashley Crisler (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) finished with 11 saves for Washington. Freshman defender Devon Mackesey (Lutherville, MD/Towson) played well in her first start, scooping up four ground balls and recording two caused turnovers and one draw control.

Muhlenberg's Courtney Tapkas scored four goals and had one assist in the loss, while Lynsey Caldwell added one goal and three assists.

The Shorewomen return to action Monday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Marymount (VA).
