5, 2003 GETTYSBURG, PA -- The Washington College women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2003 season this afternoon, falling on the road to fifth-ranked Gettysburg, 18-9, in Centennial Conference action. Gettysburg, the defending conference champions, improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 9-1 and 5-1. The Shorewomen took a 2-1 lead with 23:04 left in the first half when junior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) scored off a feed from junior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School), but the Bullets outscored Washington, 7-0, the rest of the half to race out to a 9-2 lead at the break. Junior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored her 100th career goal for the Shorewomen with 53 seconds left in the game. Studdiford and senior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) each finished with two goals and one assist. Sayres and sophomore attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) each had one goal and one assist. Megan Murphy scored seven goals and had one assist to lead the Bullets. Julika Blankenship added two goals and four assists, while Amy Farrell scored five goals and had one assist. The Shorewomen are back in action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Villa Julie.
