WC Rolls Past Catholic in Opener
Eight Shorewomen Score in 18-9 Win

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen rolled to an 18-9 win in their season opener today, defeating Catholic University at Loyola College's Curley Field. The Shorewomen (1-0) had eight different players score goals in the win and were up 10-2 at halftime.

Washington scored the first eight goals of the game, including the first four in a span of 2:02 early in the first half. Sophomore attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) got things going with a free-position goal with 25:11 to play and junior attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) followed with a goal just 11 seconds later off an assist from junior attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham). Sawma then scored a free-position goal 43 seconds after that and junior midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) finished off the spurt with a goal off an assist from senior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) with 23:09 left in the period.

The Shorewomen's lead grew as large as 13 in the second half, at 17-4, before the Cardinals (0-3) five of the final six goals of the game to provide the final margin.

Studdiford scored four goals and recorded three assists to lead WC in the win. Sayres added four goals, while senior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) tallied three. Sawma and Eichner each finished with two goals and one assist, while freshman midfielder Emmy Hyde (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) tallied one goal and one assist. Senior midfielder Kristen Bozzella (Harwood, MD/Southern) and junior defender Erin Alessi (Baldwin, MD/Notre Dame Prep) each scored one goal, while Heller contributed one assist.

Ali Jarden led the Cardinals with four goals. Anna Gateau added two goals, while Kristen Wisniewski, Colleen Boland, and Katie McCarthy each scored one goal.

Freshman goalie Ashley Crisler (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) made 12 saves while allowing nine goals in her collegiate debut for the Shorewomen.

Washington, which scored its 18 goals on just 31 shots, returns to action Tuesday with a 10:00 a.m. game against Salve Regina in Panama City, FL.
