17, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- In their first game since appearing at No. 20 in the IWLCA Division III poll, the Washington College Shorewomen used a 9-0 run in the first half and an 8-0 run in the second en route to an 18-6 victory over visiting Villa Julie. The Shorewomen improved to 8-5 with the win, while the Mustangs slipped to 6-7. Villa Julie scored the first three goals of the game, including two by Kim Gorsch, to take a 3-0 lead with 21:33 to go in the first half. The Shorewomen answered with their 9-0 run over the rest of the period, including a spurt of six goals in 11 minutes. The Mustangs cut the lead down to 9-5 in the second half, but the Shorewomen put eight unanswered goals on the board to put the game away. Sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) led the Shorewoman attack with six goals, one assist, and five draw controls, while junior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) totaled a goal and four assists. Freshman attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) contributed three goals and an assist, junior attacker Tracy Smet (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) added two goals and two assists, and sophomore attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) tallied two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) scooped up eight ground balls to go along with her one goal and one assist. Gorsch led Villa Julie with three goals. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson College.
