11, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The seventh-ranked Ursinus College Bears, the defending Centennial Conference champions, grabbed a 10-2 halftime lead en route to an 18-7 defeat of host Washington College this afternoon at Shriver Field. The Bears improved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while the Shorewomen slipped to 6-5 and 5-2. The score was tied at 1-1 early in the first half, but Ursinus used a 5-0 run to pull ahead 6-2 with 15:02 left in the period. The Shorewomen got back on the board when junior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) scored an unassisted goal with five minutes to play, but the Bears answered with four straight goals in a span of 1:28 to gain the 10-2 halftime advantage. The Shorewomen twice cut the lead to seven in the second half, but could get no closer. Sophomore attacker Emily Durkin (Germantown, MD/Holy Cross) and senior midfielder Erin Fitzgerald (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) combined for eight goals and three assists in the win for the Bears. Durkin contributed four goals and one assist, while Fitzgerald finished with four goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Diane Elia (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) added three goals and senior attacker Jaime Matty (Kimberton, PA/Phoenixville) tallied one goal and three assists. Weller and sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) each contributed two goals to aid the Shorewoman cause. Weller also scooped up six ground balls. Freshman midfielder Lindsay Stockfisch (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added one goal and one assist and sophomore defender Diana Martin (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) tallied three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) finished with 14 saves. The Shorewomen return to action with an 11:00 a.m. Centennial Conference game Saturday at 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall.
