2, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen got off to their first 4-0 Centennial Conference start in team history with a 12-9 win over Swarthmore College today at Shriver Field. The Shorewomen, who got four goals and three assists from sophomore attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School), rallied from what was once a 5-1 deficit in the first half to earn the win. Swarthmore (2-3, 0-3 Centennial Conference) struck first when Katie Tarr scored off a pass from Kim Cariello with 26:36 to play to in the first half. Washington responded less than two minutes later when junior midfielder Kristen Bozzella (Harwood, MD/Southern) scored an unassisted goal. Swarthmore scored the next four goals, however, and grabbed a four-goal lead with 8:01 to play before the break on an unassisted marker by Liz Brainard. The Shorewoman rally began late in the first half as Washington (5-3, 4-0) scored three times in the closing minutes of the period. Studdiford scored twice off of assists by freshman attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), with 2:31 to play eight seconds to play and junior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) sandwiched a free position goal between Studdiford's scores with 1:21 on the clock. Washington then scored the first two goals of the second half to go ahead 6-5. Sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored off a Weller assist with 28:34 left and junior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) followed with a goal off a Studdiford feed with 24:48 to play. The Garnet tied the score at 6-6 on a goal by Mavis Biss with 21:34 left, but the Shorewomen grabbed a 9-6 lead by scoring three goals in a span of 1:41. That spurt was capped off when Heller found junior attacker Tracy Smet (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) for a goal with 19:04 left. Swarthmore answered with a 3-0 spurt of its own to tie the game at 9-9. Tarr scored the tieing goal off an assist from Mariam Levy with 11:56 remaining. The Shorewomen went on to shut out the Garnet for the remained of the game and put up three more goals of their own to gain the victory. Studdiford scored what proved to be the game-winner off an Eichner feed with 9:42 to go, Sawma followed with a goal off an assist from Studdiford with 8:09 to go, and Studdiford closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 5:38 remaining. Studdiford's seven total points paced the Shorewoman offense. Eichner finished with three assists and Heller added a goal and two assists. Sawma (two goals) and Weller (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point outings. Tarr's four goals led Swarthmore. Biss scored two goals, while Levy added two assists.
