Salisbury Nips Shorewomen, 9-8
Studdiford Nets Four Goals

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 20th-ranked Washington College Shorewomen dropped a nail-biter to Eastern Shore rival and 15th-ranked Salisbury University, 9-8, this afternoon at Shriver Field. The Shorewomen slipped to 9-6 overall with the loss, while the Sea Gulls improved to 9-6 with the win.

Neither team got on the board until Washington sophomore attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) scored off a feed from junior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) with 20:18 to play in the first half. Salisbury tied the score at 18:35 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Julie Herring (Edgewater, MD/South River). WC pulled ahead 2-1 at the 14:40 mark when Studdiford found junior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) for a goal, but the Sea Gulls tied the score 2:37 later when Herring scored again, this time off an assist from senior midfielder Amanda Almon (Columbia, MD/Hammond).

The Sea Gulls grabbed their first lead with 9:22 to play in the half when Almon scored off a pass from sophomore midfielder Jessica White (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis). The Shorewomen knotted the score at 3-3 with 4:08 to go in the period as Weller scored off a Heller assist. Studdiford scooped up a loose ball and fired it in the goal with two seconds to play in the half to give WC a 4-3 edge.

The Shorewomen went up 5-3 with 27:30 left in the game when sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored in an unusual fashion. Sawma attempted a pass to Weller over Salisbury junior goalie Dena Glisan (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills). Glisan tried to intercept the ball but dropped it into her goal. Salisbury rallied to score the next four goals, however, including two by Almon. Almon's goal with 12:17 remaining gave the Sea Gulls a 7-5 lead.

The Shorewomen would answer back. Heller fed Studdiford for a goal at 10:28 and Sawma scored of an Eichner pass at 7:31 to tie the game at 7-7. Salisbury senior attacker Gina Glorioso (Reisterstown, MD/Mount de Sales) scored an unassisted goal to put Salisbury up 8-7 with 6:26 on the clock, but Eichner found Studdiford just 20 seconds later to tie the score again.

Sea Gull senior attacker Christine Sliger (Whiteford, MD/North Harford) scored what would prove to be the game-winner with 3:56 left off a pass from Almon. The Sea Gulls won the ensuing draw and managed to run the clock down to under a minute remaining before the Shorewomen could get the ball back on their end of the field. WC did have one more chance in that final minute, but could not get a shot off before Salisbury regained possession with under ten seconds left.

Almon led Salisbury with three goals and two assists, while Herring tallied three goals and Sliger had a goal and two assists.

Studdiford scored a game-high four goals and added an assist for WC. Weller and Sawma each scored twice, while Heller had three assists and Eichner had two. Sophomore goalie Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) made 14 saves for the Shorewomen. Senior defender Robin Necker (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers in her final home game.

The Shorewomen will play eighth-ranked Gettysburg Saturday in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference playoffs at Ursinus College.
