WC Falls to No. 7 St. Mary's
Studdiford Scores Three Goals

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen lost a non-conference game on the road at seventh-ranked St. Mary's (MD) College by a 16-5 final this afternoon in St. Mary's City. The Shorewomen fell to 1-3 with the loss, while the Seahawks improved to 6-0.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead within the first nine minutes of the contest. The Shorewomen got on the board at the 12:42 mark when sophomore attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) scored the first of her three goals on the day off a pass from junior midfielder Kristen Bozzella (Harwood, MD/Southern). The Seahawks' Megan McFall scored the next four goals of the game, however, to grab a 9-1 lead. Studdiford's second goal, this one off a feed from freshman attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) came at the 26:15 mark and cut the lead to 9-2 at the break.

St. Mary's extended its lead in the second half by scoring the first five goals of the period to grab a 14-2 lead at 47:34. The Shorewomen managed a late charge as Studdiford, freshman midfielder Lindsay Stockfisch (Wilton, CT/Wilton), and sophomore Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) each scored a goal over a span of 3:49 to make the score 14-5 at 53:08. The Seahawks tacked on two goals in the final 20 seconds to provide the final margin.

McFall finished with six goals and one assist on the day for St. Mary's. Sarah Sloane added three goals and two assists, while Carol Schmoeller contributed two goals and two assists. Kathy Holmes tallied one goal and three assists for the victors. Seahawk goalie Jen Chumley made 13 saves while allowing just five goals in 60 minutes of play.

Studdiford notched an assist to go along with her team-high three goals for WC. In the Shorewomen's past two games, both of which have come against top-10 teams, Studdiford has tallied seven of WC's 13 goals. Bozella also turned in a multiple-point effort, contributing two assists. Sophomore midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) played a solid all-around game, recording game-highs of five ground balls and three draw controls. Sophomore goalie Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) recorded 14 saves.

The Shorewomen open play in the Centennial Conference and open play at home when they host Muhlenberg Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. game at Shriver Field.
