23, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen opened both their home schedule and their Centennial Conference schedule with a win today, defeating Muhlenberg, 12-6, this afternoon at Shriver Field. The Shorewomen improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while the Mules slipped to 1-4 and 0-1 with the loss. The Shorewomen got on the board early, when sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) scored the first of her five goals in the game just 1:35 into the contest off a pass from sophomore attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School). The Mules came back to grab their only lead of the game, however, when senior midfielder Teresa Lunardi (Exton, PA/West Chester Henderson) scored an unassisted goal at 8:14 and freshman attacker Amy Lanning (Westwood, MA/Westwood) followed with a goal off a pass from sophomore attacker Alexis Yanoff (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Friends) at 9:32. Washington took control of the game by scoring the next seven goals. Sawma and Studdiford each scored twice during that run for WC. Sawma capped off the skein with a goal at 24:35 off a pass from freshman attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) to give WC an 8-2 lead. The Mules scored two goals late in the first half to trim the lead to 8-4. Sawma opened the second half scoring off another feed from Eichner at the 33:43 mark, but Lunardi answered with an unassisted goal at 40:38 to cut the lead back to four at 9-5. Sophomore midfielder Minta Sayres (East Haddam, CT/Westminster School) scored for WC 66 seconds later off a pass from junior attacker Sunni Houston (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) and Sawma scored her final goal of the day off an Eichner pass at 51:44 to give WC an 11-5 lead. The two teams exchanged goals to provide the final margin. Sawma's five-goal performance led all scorers, while Studdiford finished with two goals and two assists for WC.
