2, 2002 TOWSON, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen opened their 2002 season with an 11-5 loss at No. 16 Goucher this afternoon in Towson, MD. Goucher led 7-4 at the half and outscored the Shorewomen 4-1 in the second period to secure the win. The Gophers' Ashley Snyder opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 1:07 into the game. WC answered with a goal by sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) at 3:07. Sawma's goal came off an assist from sophomore attacker Janet Studdiford (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School). Muffie Bliss then scored an an unassisted goal for Goucher at 5:29, which was followed by an unassisted tally from Studdiford that evened the score at 2-2. The Gophers then reeled off three unanswered goals to go up 5-2. Lauren Manekin fed Kate Jarvis for a goal at 10:47, Kate Howell followed with a goal at 16:23, and Lori Petruzzi scored off a Snyder assist at 18:11. Washington junior attacker Sunni Houston (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) scored at 23:56 to cut the lead down to two, but Jarvis scored off a Jen Thompson pass at 25:47 to give Goucher a 6-3 advantage. Manekin scored 20 seconds later to up the lead to four, but Houston scored at 29:48 to get the Shorewomen within three at the break. Manekin scored off a Howell assist at 36:34 and Saburah Posner scored off a Manekin assist 13 seconds later as Goucher went up 9-4 to start the second half. Washington freshman attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) scored an unassisted tally at 37:55 to end the scoring for the Shorewomen. Unassisted goals by Bliss (41:55) and Jarvis (43:30) rounded out the scoring for the Gophers. The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Catholic.
