8, 2002 WASHINGTON, DC -- The Washington College Shorewomen posted their first win of the 2002 season today with a 10-8 victory at Catholic University. The Shorewomen (1-1) held the Cardinals to only two late goals during the second half. The Shorewomen got on the board first when junior midfielder Kristen Bozzella (Harwood, MD/Southern) scored an unassisted goal 1:44 into the contest. CUA answered 31 seconds later when Kate Abbonizio fed Kristen Wisniewski to even the score. WC countered with a free position goal by sophomore attacker Casey Sawma (Conway, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) at 4:50, but Abbonizio found Wisniewski for a goal again at 7:39 and the Cardinals went on to take their only lead on a free position goal by Anna Gateau at 9:45 . The Shorewomen then scored the next four goals to take a 6-3 lead. Freshman attacker Lindsey Eichner (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) scored an unassisted goal at 9:57 and Sawma tallied an unassisted goal of her own at 10:18. At 11:28, Eichner fed junior attacker Paige Heller (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) for a goal and Heller added the tally that gave WC a three-goal lead at 23:18. The Cardinals the rallied to tie the score at halftime as Wisniewski scored at 24:44 off an Ann Lawall assist and at 26:39 off another Abbonizio feed. Jen Utz evened the score just three seconds before the break with an unassisted goal at 29:57. Washington started the second half strong. Junior attacker Sunni Houston (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) rifled home a free position goal at 35:14 and Eichner found Sawma for a goal at 39:40. Freshman midfielder Lindsay Stockfisch (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored an unassisted goal at 40:28 to put the Shorewomen up 9-6. The Cardinals mounted a rally late in the game. Gateau scored an unassisted goal at 51:34 and then found Ali Jordan for a goal at 57:54 that cut the lead to 9-8. The Shorewomen withstood the charge, however, and a goal by Heller off an assist from Stockfisch at 59:50 sealed the win with 10 seconds to play. Sawma and Heller each finished with three goals for WC, while Eichner tallied a goal and three assists. Sophomore goalie Mandy Higdon (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) was credited with 18 saves in the win. Junior midfielder Betty Weller (Sudlersville, MD/Queen Anne's County) tallied three caused turnovers. Wisniewski led CUA with four goals, while Anna Gateau scored two goals and notched one assist and Abbonizio added three helpers. The Shorewomen depart for their spring break trip to Florida tomorrow morning and will face William Smith in Panama City at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
