SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College withstood a second-half rally to defeat visiting Washington College, 4-3, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game this evening at Clothier Field. The Garnet improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 4-4 and 0-3 with the loss.

Swarthmore got on the board with 31:52 left in the first half as Sara McCabe fired in a high shot off an assist from Alex Gilbert-Bono. Junior attack/midfielder Jaimie Barlow (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) knotted the score at 1-1 when she rifled in a shot from near the top of the circle with 17:44 left in the opening period. The Garnet moved back in front with 11:21 left in the first half when Hoa Pham scored off an assist from Abbie Fischer. Fischer then pushed the lead to 3-1 by firing in a hard shot with 1:12 remaining before the break.

The Garnet struck quickly in the second half as Stone put in a feed from McCabe with 32:09 left in the game. Washington trimmed the lead to 4-2 when junior attack Candace Gaull (Laurel, DE/Laurel) scored off a pass ahead from sophomore midfielder Kelly Tancredi (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) with 13:16 remaining. Gaull extended her goal-scoring streak to four games with the tally. Barlow scored her second goal of the game with 5:09 left when she redirected in a shot off the stick of Gaull, pulling the Shorewomen within one goal. Swarthmore was able to hold Washington without a shot for the remainder of the game, however, to come away with the win.

Swarthmore held a 31-14 advantage in shots and an 8-7 edge in penalty corners in the game. Katie Ashmore made six saves in the victory for the Garnet, while sophomore goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made 17 saves for the Shorewomen.
