17, 2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Colleen Farrell scored four goals to lead visiting Haverford College past host Washington College, 7-5, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game today on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Fords improved to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 4-10 and 0-7 with the loss. Washington took a 1-0 lead when sophomore attack Kristin Bircsak (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) scored off an assist from junior attack Candace Gaull (Laurel, DE/Laurel) after the ball got behind Haverford goalkeeper Sarah Graves with 31:07 left in the first half. The Fords quickly tied things up 32 seconds later as Farrell scored on a loose ball. Farrell then gave Haverford a 2-1 lead when she blasted in a shot off a penalty corner pass from Meeran Ahn with 25:41 to play in the first period. Haverford stretched the lead to 3-1 when Lauren Kemph scored with 17:15 left in the opening period. Kemph knocked in a ball that came back out after a defensive save by WC junior defender Cora Jo Spare (North East, MD/North East). Farrell then scored her third goal of the period off a feed from Sarah Walker with 16:08 remaining. Kemph scored her second goal of the period off an assist from Ariel Herm with 2:57 left in first to push the lead to 5-1, before Washington answered with an unassisted goal by junior attack/midfielder Jaimie Barlow (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) 52 seconds later to make the score 5-2 at the break. Farrell opened the second-half scoring with her fourth goal of the game 4:24 into the period, giving the Fords a 6-2 advantage. Barlow then scored her second goal of the game, following a rebound of her own shot, to trim the margin to 6-3 with 24:07 remaining in regulation. Washington closed within two goals when junior attack Amy Spadanuta (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) redirected in a ball sent into the middle of the circle by freshman attack Danielle Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequa Valley) with 18:41 on the clock. Haverford then pushed the lead back to three goals when Alex Waleko scored off an assist from Ahn with 13:17 to play, making it 7-4. Bircsak scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Spadanuta with 3:22 remaining to provide the final margin at 7-5. Graves played the first half in goal for Haverford, making one save and allowing two goals. Maggie Cronin played the second half, making five saves and allowing three goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) played 57:09 in goal for Washington, allowing five goals and making two saves. Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) played 12:51, made one save, and allowed two goals. Washington held a 20-15 advantage in shots and a 12-9 edge in penalty corners in the game. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against McDaniel.
