15, 2006 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington topped visiting Washington College, 2-1, in double overtime to pick up a non-conference field hockey win this afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 0-4 with the loss. The winning goal came on a penalty stroke by the Eagles' Sarah Pierson with 8:12 to play in the second overtime. Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead in the game when Pierson scored off an assist from Amy Santella with 14:43 to play in the first half. The Shorewomen tied things up with just 6:05 to play in the second half when sophomore attack Amy Spadanuta (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) scored. Katherine Brown made one save in the win for Mary Washington, while freshman goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made 18 stops for the Shorewomen, including 15 after halftime. Mary Washington held a 23-5 advantage in shots. Washington maintained a 14-11 edge in penalty corners. The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. game at St. Mary's (MD).
