2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attack Megan Rainey (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored the game-winning goal late in the second half as host Washington College picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Swarthmore College, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Garnet fell to 8-4 and 3-2. Lindsay Roth gave the Garnet a 1-0 lead with 20:20 left in the first half when she scored off a feed from Summer Spicer. The Shorewomen tied things up when junior attack Rachel Miller (Greene, NY/Greene) redirected in a ball off the stick of senior attack Molly Gavin (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) during a penalty corner with 11:58 to play in the period. Swarthmore regained the lead to open the second half as Ashley Gunter scored off an assists from Julia Morrison with 32:29 remaining. The Shorewomen tied things up with 17:31 remaining as junior attack Amanda Garbart (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) scored off an assist from sophomore attack Candace Gaull (Laurel, DE/Laurel). The assist was the first of Gaull's collegiate career. Rainey's winning goal came when she recovered a loose ball and rocketed it into the goal with 5:57 left in the contest. Freshman goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made 12 saves for the Shorewomen. Karen Lorang made four for Swarthmore. Swarthmore held an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners in the game. The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Bryn Mawr.
